Korea event weather: what four KMA observation windows actually change

A public-data analysis of Seoul, Busan, Andong, and Jinju observation windows, with event-specific decisions and a strict boundary between history and forecast.

Best for: Visitors planning an exposed waterfront show, regional night festival, palace ceremony, or long outdoor route who need to turn weather data into a specific fallback decision.

Method: We queried the Korea Meteorological Administration ASOS daily-observation API for the same calendar window in the previous year, then mapped each sample to one reviewed event decision. Historical observations are never presented as a forecast.

Four event windows, four different planning risks

K-Spot Now requested seven-day same-period 2025 observations from the KMA ASOS daily API for four reviewed 2026 event contexts. The values below are preserved as planning references. They show which failure mode deserves a backup; they do not predict the weather for the 2026 visit.

The largest number is not a forecast

Busan and Jinju had wet reference windows, but the dates and places differ. The valid conclusion is to design a rain failure plan, not to predict that the 2026 event will be wet.

One city can require several decisions

A Seoul museum visit, palace queue, and garden route share a station record but not the same exposure. Event format must sit beside the weather number.

Regional festivals cannot use one convenient pin

Andong and Jinju span multiple outdoor areas. A single city forecast is a planning layer, while the organizer's venue map controls the actual route.

MethodThe stored dataset records station 108 for Seoul, 159 for Busan, 136 for Andong, and 192 for Jinju. Averages and totals are published exactly as returned by the reviewed import, without filling missing days or extrapolating to 2026.

LimitDifferent date windows cannot be ranked as a climate study, and one previous-year week cannot predict an event day. Use current KMA forecasts and organizer notices before travel.

Read the sample as a failure-mode test

The purpose of a historical observation is not to tell a traveler what the sky will do. It tests whether the itinerary survives a plausible combination of heat, rain, humidity, and exposure. The Gwangalli sample makes an indoor waiting option valuable; the Jinju sample makes a shorter walking loop and dry return more important; the Andong temperature range makes a day-to-night layer rational.

Because the four samples use different event windows, comparing their rainfall as a league table would be misleading. Each row belongs only to the event decision beside it. Current forecasts replace the historical reference as the date approaches, while the organizer remains the authority for cancellation, delay, and entry.

Match the weather point to the exposed part of the visit

A hotel forecast is not automatically the right forecast. For Gwangalli, the exposed decision happens at the beach and during the wait for a fixed-time show. For Jinju, it happens across a riverside walking route and bridge crossings. For Andong, several venues mean the traveler must first know which program and location they are attending.

Separate event duration from exposure duration. Add the walk from transit, admission queue, time needed to secure a viewing position, outdoor meal or merchandise queue, and the return to a station. A 12-minute show can create a two-hour weather commitment; a long indoor exhibition can still include a hot or wet approach.

Use a 72-hour, 24-hour, departure sequence

Around 72 hours before the visit, choose the outdoor/indoor order and decide what would trigger a fallback. Around 24 hours before, move to the venue-level KMA forecast and record the issue time, event hours, temperature, precipitation, and relevant wind or alert signal. At departure, reopen both the forecast and the organizer notice rather than relying on a saved icon.

Change the plan when an official safety alert applies, the organizer cancels or modifies operation, or the full exposure exceeds the group's stated tolerance. Otherwise adjust arrival time, equipment, or route length. This sequence produces a decision that can be audited; generic seasonal language does not.

  • 72 hours: define the exact weather condition that activates the indoor fallback.
  • 24 hours: record the venue district, forecast issue time, event hours, and exposure duration.
  • Departure: reopen KMA, safety alerts, and the organizer notice on the same device.
  • After a change: shorten the route before adding another cross-city reservation.
