Why lanterns belong on this river

VISITKOREA connects the lantern tradition with the 1592 siege of Jinjuseong: lights on the river served wartime communication and defense. That account gives the river and fortress a historical relationship; they are not simply a scenic background added to a light display.

Our suggested first reading is to look at the fortress, the water and the illuminated objects as three connected parts of the setting. Compare the historical explanation with the contemporary designs you encounter, without assuming every lantern reproduces a wartime object. A present-day festival can carry a memory while also creating new entertainment.

Opening night is not the regular lighting clock

On September 17, the official homepage labels the festival October 3–18, 2026 and gives a general lantern-lighting window of 18:00–24:00. Separately, it schedules the opening lantern-lighting ceremony for October 3 at 19:30 at the Mangyeong-dong special stage. For that ceremony, plan around 19:30 rather than treating the general 18:00 lighting time as its start.

The same page lists fireworks on October 3, 9 and 17 at 20:00 between Jinju Bridge and Cheonsu Bridge. Those are selected dates, not a nightly inclusion. If fireworks determine your trip, recheck the operator's notice for that date; a scheduled program is not a guarantee against a weather or operational change.

VISITKOREA confirms the 2026 festival dates but still labels its detailed program as based on 2025. Use that page for historical context and the date cross-check, and the operator's current program for specific evening events. A previous edition's attraction list is not a timetable for the night you choose.

A fortress-led visit or a riverside-led visit?

For a history-led evening, take the fortress as your anchor. The operator's course connects the West Gate, Hoguksa Temple, Jinju National Museum, Chokseongnu Pavilion and the Chokseongmun exit before crossing toward Manggyeong-dong. Our recommendation is to select the fortress and pavilion portion first, then add the river crossing only if your ticket and departure plan support it. The festival's nighttime hours do not establish the museum's opening hours.

For a lantern-led evening, begin with the Manggyeong-dong riverside instead. The operator's map of courses places food and activities on that side and identifies Pontoon Bridge 1 as a link toward the fortress area. This is a different emphasis, not an instruction to complete every numbered bridge. Save 진주성 촉석문 or 망경동 남강둔치 according to the side you actually intend to reach.

The benefit of choosing a side is that the visit still has a coherent purpose if queues or restrictions make a crossing impractical. We are selecting from the operator's route sequence, not claiming a timed, surveyed or wheelchair-tested circuit.

Two crossings or a day pass? Do the small calculation first

The Naver seller linked from the festival lists 편도권 (one-way) at KRW 2,000 and 종일권 (day pass) at KRW 6,000. Its guide says the day pass covers all pontoon bridges. At those listed prices, two one-way crossings cost KRW 4,000; three reach KRW 6,000. Our recommendation is to choose your route before buying the more expensive pass—not to assume that every visitor needs a day pass.

The published online-use flow is KakaoTalk QR delivery, buyer-information verification, then collection of a physical ticket. The guide directs free or discounted categories to buy on site with supporting documents. We verified the public Korean price labels and instructions, not an overseas purchase. Confirm that your phone/account can receive and present the ticket before paying online.

Ticketing cutoff is 22:50 and bridge operation ends at 23:00. Do not lose the physical ticket: the seller says it cannot be replaced or refunded. A day pass is not a sixteen-day festival pass; verify the validity on the ticket issued for your visit. These prices and instructions were checked September 18 and can change.

Work backward from your departure

Lanterns are generally lit until midnight, one hour later than bridge and booth closing. Plan to finish any crossing-dependent part before that earlier cutoff and be on the side needed for departure. A lit river is not evidence of a still-running bridge, and neither clock tells you the last bus or train home.

If your usable departure leaves no workable margin after an opening event or fireworks, choose an overnight visit or omit that program. The less ambitious plan can preserve the experience you actually came for. We do not give a universal walking buffer because queues, access controls and individual mobility can change it.
